Your moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon occupied at the moment you were born — in astrology it describes how you feel, react, and self-soothe. This free calculator finds it from your birth date, time, and place with the same engine as the MoonQ app. No birth time? You still get an honest answer: one sign, or both candidates when the Moon changed signs that day.

Find your moon sign

Everything is computed on your device with the same engine as the MoonQ app — nothing about your birth leaves this page.

The calculator needs JavaScript to compute your own result. A full worked example is shown below — the page works either way.

Two worked examples, honestly handled

So the page is useful even with JavaScript off, here is exactly what the calculator returns — once with a known birth time, and once without one on a day the Moon crossed a sign edge.

With a birth time — 4 July 1991, 4:00 PM — Austin, Texas

Moon
Aries
9°24′ · House 6

With the exact time, the Moon's degree and house are real: 9°24′ Aries, house 6.

Without a birth time — 23 June 1996 — Chicago, Illinois (birth time unknown)

The Moon may be Virgo or Libra — it crossed a sign edge that day (the noon Moon sits at 26°35′ Virgo, inside the ±7° edge window). A birth time settles it.

How the moon sign calculator works

The Moon is the fastest mover in your birth chart — it crosses the whole zodiac in about 27.3 days, which means it changes sign roughly every two and a half days, spending a little over two days in each. That speed is why the Moon, more than any other placement, sometimes needs your birth time, not just your birth date.

With a birth time

The calculator converts your local birth moment to universal time, computes the Moon's ecliptic longitude with the same closed-form series the MoonQ app uses, and gives you the sign, the exact degree, and — with your birthplace — the house it falls in.

Without a birth time — the honest path

The chart is cast for noon, the same fallback the app uses. On most days that's fine: the Moon sits safely mid-sign, and your moon sign is certain even though the exact degree isn't. But the Moon moves 12–15° a day, so if the noon Moon sits within about 7° of a sign edge, you could genuinely be either of two signs depending on your birth hour. In 2026, that's the case on almost half of all days. Most calculators quietly pick one; this one shows both candidates and tells you a birth time would settle it — because a plausible wrong answer is worse than an honest "either".

Where to find your birth time

Birth certificates, hospital records, or a parent's memory of "just before lunch" — even a rough hour usually settles the sign, since only the edge cases are ambiguous.

Moon sign questions

What is my moon sign?

Your moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was in at your birth. Enter your birth date, place, and (ideally) time in the calculator above and it computes the Moon's exact position with the same engine as the MoonQ app — sign, degree, and house.

Can I find my moon sign without my birth time?

Usually, yes. The Moon spends just over two days in each sign, so on most dates the sign is certain from the date alone. But if the Moon changed signs on your birthday — true for nearly half of all days — the honest answer is two candidates, and this calculator shows both rather than silently picking one. A birth time settles it.

How often does the Moon change signs?

About every 2.3 days. The Moon crosses the entire zodiac in roughly 27.3 days (a sidereal month), moving 12–15° per day — which is why it's the one placement where the birth time matters most.

What does my moon sign mean?

In astrology, the Moon describes your emotional style: how feelings arrive, what safety feels like, and how you recharge. Your Sun, Moon, and rising together make up your Big 3 — the Moon is the inner-life third of that trio.

Moon sign vs sun sign — what's the difference?

Your sun sign follows the calendar date (the Sun spends a month per sign); your moon sign follows the Moon's much faster orbit. The Sun is what you're growing into; the Moon is how you feel on the way there. Two people with the same sun sign often have completely different moon signs.

How accurate is this calculator?

The Moon's position is computed to arc-second precision with the same code the MoonQ iOS app runs, verified against the app engine to better than a billionth of a degree. The only honest uncertainty is a missing birth time — and the calculator tells you exactly when that matters.
